Dr. Antoni Plaséncia is Director of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and Associate Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He is the former Deputy Director of the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research-Hospital Clínic-Universitat de Barcelona (now the research branch of ISGlobal), Dr. Plaséncia was previously Director General of Public Health of Catalonia, Spain, were he was strongly involved in the design of the Catalan public health law and the creation of the Public Health Agency of Catalonia.
Dr. Plaséncia’s professional work has been mainly dedicated to epidemiology and public health in various positions, combining practice, research, teaching, and management activities, with a broad biological, social, and environmental perspective on health and its determinants, with a longstanding involvement in policy-making, strategic planning, and program implementation and evaluation. This has included work in key global health areas such as the reduction of health inequalities, infectious diseases, maternal and child health, injuries, and environmental health.
Dr. Plaséncia earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Barcelona and a doctoral degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He is a specialist in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and earned a master’s degree in Public Health from Yale University.
