Dr Hoda Youssef Atta, an Egyptian national by birth, has served as the Regional Malaria Advisor for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (EMRO) since 2004. In this position, she is responsible for providing technical support to the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the malaria control and elimination program. She has worked to support malaria elimination and certification efforts in several countries of the region, including the United Arab Emirates and Morocco, which are both now certified as malaria-free. Prior to her current position, Dr Atta worked as a medical officer in the WHO/EMRO malaria unit (1998-2004) and as an associate professor in the Community Medicine Department at the Alexandria University Faculty of Medicine (1995–1997) in Egypt.

Dr Atta was awarded a doctoral dissertation grant from the National Institutes in Health in 1993 and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology in 1994 from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Dr Atta earned a bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from the College of Medicine in 1984 and a master’s degree in Public Health (Preventive and Social Medicine) in 1989 from Alexandria University.
